Japan has excluded from sanctions three Russian energy projects in which Japanese companies are actively participating, according to an announcement posted to the website of the country’s Economy Ministry. Tokyo excluded from its economic restriction measures three “major Russian energy projects” that have the active participation of Japanese companies and are considered critical to the country’s energy security, reports the Japanese Ministry of Economy on its website. Thus, the Sakhalin-1 energy project and the Sakhalin-2 and Arctic LNG 2 liquefied natural gas projects, considered by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry as “particularly necessary for Japan’s energy security”, are not subject to Tokyo sanctions.
In this context, the Ministry specified that said companies have the green light to carry out “operations of services related to the exploration, extraction, liquefaction, storage, transportation and transshipment of crude oil and fuel natural gas, as well as related businesses”, and are not subject to “the ban on the provision of construction and engineering services to the Russian Federation”, which will come into force from September 30, 2023.
On May 26, Japan announced aircraft to ban the provision of architectural and engineering services to Russia. The Asian country has been aligning its policy towards Moscow with the Western sanctions imposed in response to the Russian military special operation in Ukraine.
