Man Boards Vande Bharat Train to Urinate

Hopping into the Bhopal-Indore Vande Bharat to use the toilet cost a man dearly as the automatic doors closed and the train pulled out, leaving his bewildered family staring helplessly. The man was carried - pleading in vain for a halt - to Ujjain where he had to pay a fine of Rs 1,020, buy a ticket for Rs 700 to return to Bhopal, and lost Rs 4,000 worth of tickets which he had purchased to travel with his family to Singrauli.

Railway passengers in India, used to manual gates (or none), are taking time to get used to the automatic locks of the Vande Bharat. The incident took place on July 15. The family, residents of Singrauli in MP, traveled to Bhopal from Hyderabad by the Dakshin Express and alighted here around 5.30 pm. They were supposed to board another train to Singrauli, 720km away. The Indore-bound Vande Bharat train was standing on platform number 4. The swanky Vande Bharat may have looked inviting and he hopped in for a quick loo break, say officials.

He didn't realise that the train had 60 seconds to departure. At 7.25pm, the doors shut and the train began rolling. The man realized this and rushed out but found the exits closed. He pleaded with the train staff and was bewildered when told that the doors wouldn't open until the next stop, Ujjain, at 9.30pm. The passenger paid a fine, got off at Ujjain and boarded a bus for the 220km journey back to Bhopal, where his wife and a child were waiting for him on the same platform. Bhopal railway division officials confirmed the incident and said that there are toilets on every platform. "There's no need to board a train to use the toilet," said an official.
