A 20-year-old college student who ran a 10-kilometre marathon in Madurai on Sunday morning fell unconscious an hour after the event and died of sudden cardiac arrest two hours later in hospital. The deceased, M Dhineshkumar of Kallakurichi district, was a final year BE mechanical engineering student at Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Thiruparankundram, Madurai.
He was among 4,500 men and women participating in 'Uthiram 2023' blood donation awareness marathon organised by Madurai Medical College. Most of the participants were college students from various districts across the state. Student felt uneasy 1 hour after event
The marathon was flagged off by health minister Ma Subramanian along with commercial taxes minister P Moorthy around 6am at the medical college. The participants had to cover the 10km distance and return to the college. About an hour after completing the marathon, Dhineshkumar went to the restroom as he felt uneasy. According to doctors at Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) nearby, other students found him suffering from fits at the restroom and immediately alerted the medical team nearby, which administered first aid.
Dhineshkumar was soon taken in an ambulance and admitted to the emergency ward of GRH by 8.45am. "He was found to have low blood pressure and pulse. Though we provided him life-saving treatment, he remained unconscious throughout the time he was admitted to the hospital. The youth subsequently suffered a sudden cardiac arrest and died without responding to treatment at 10.45 am," said hospital dean Dr A Rathinavel. GRH police are investigating and the body of the student has been sent for post mortem examination.
