Franchise leagues are a big hit in India with almost every sport vying for the attention of sport lovers in India to take notice of their leagues. In a first-of-its-kind, a women's basketball league was launched titled 'Elite Women's Pro Basketball League' which aims to give upcoming hoopsters a chance to play alongside the biggest names in India in a 5x5 format. Nation wide try outs were held at various locations including Noida, Hyderabad, Mumbai and finally at Kolkata which will conclude on the 24th of June 2023.
The biggest motto for the league is to make sure that athletesget remunerated fairly because only then would they envision a bigger goal than to just collect certificates. The man behind the league, Mr. Sunny Bhandarkarforsees that more youngsters will want to be a part of this ecosystem and have great role models in the way that cricket currently has. This will also help more people follow basketball and make this a household sport and create superstars for the next generation to emulate.
The selection committee will include top coaches from India who will judge players on the basis of skills, drills, and also how the athlete adapts to playing with different teams and strategies and the shortlisted players will be drafted into the six teams and the selectors include retired basketball coaches of Sports Authority of India (SAI) H. Parmeshwar and Jagat Narayan Nehra. The selected athletes will then go on to signing a professional contract with EWPBL and is confident about attracting top players and coaches from across India. Sunny Bhandarkar has been relentlessly working on the league and has previously said, "all the league wants is to change the conversation around women in sport in India as it can be looked at as just an extracurricular activity instead of a primary career option. Just like the WNBA in the United States and WPL in India, Elite Pro Women's Basketball League wants to make sport a viable career pathway for athletes in India."
