With victory over countrywoman Jiske Griffioen on Saturday, the 26-year-old Dutchwoman celebrated her fifth Wimbledon ladies’ title and third straight at The Championships. She also lifted her 19th Grand Slam singles trophy overall.
“It's an incredibly special moment for me,” said De Groot, who took 53 minutes to record a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Griffioen, who had eliminated No.2 seed Yui Kamiji in Friday’s semi-final. With both ladies’ semi-finals having been staged on No.1 Court, De Groot was delighted with the opportunity to further showcase wheelchair tennis. “Playing here at Wimbledon is always very special and so many people got to see the level that we have,” she added. “And every time, we go out there [and] we play our best.”
De Groot continues to produce that astonishing best at practically every Grand Slam. In three 2023 matches, the Dutchwoman surrendered only 11 games at The Championships. On an unseasonably windy day in London, De Groot was pleased to manage both the challenging conditions and a challenging opponent in Griffioen, who was the inaugural ladies’ singles champion at Wimbledon in 2016.
