Oldest person in Asia get bilateral lung transplantation

A 78-year-old patient, became the oldest person in Asia to get bilateral lung transplantation done. The successful completion of the high-risk procedure was conducted by doctors at MGM Healthcare, a multi-speciality hospital in Chennai. Dr KR Balakrishnan, Director of the Institute of Heart and Lung Transplant & Mechanical Circulatory Support, led the complex surgery alongside co-director Dr Suresh Rao KG and Director of the pulmonology department Dr Apar Jindal.

A Bangalore resident, was battling aspiration pneumonia with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and was on ventilator support for 15 days and on ECMO (Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation) support for more than 50 years. Keeping in mind all the pros and cons of a major procedure, considering the age factor, the experts suggested a lung transplant as the patient was otherwise fit and could endure surgery. Having registered on the state transplant registry for bilateral lung transplantation, the patient underwent the procedure following the availability of a suitable brain-dead donor.

Bilateral lung transplant is a surgical technique in which surgeons remove both the diseased lungs, one at a time, and then attach the donor lungs into the patient's airways and to the blood vessels that lead to and from the heart. "Given the patient's condition and age, this procedure presented significant challenges. Immediately after surgery, the patient was transferred to the ICU. We are immensely proud of his progress with a remarkable recovery. He is ready to be discharged in the coming days," Dr KR Balakrishnan. The CEO of MGM Healthcare, Harish Manian, expressed his pride in the work of the medical team and said that the hospital remains steadfast in its dedication to offering world-class healthcare services.
