Neal Skupski fulfilled his Wimbledon dream as he and Wesley Koolhof secured the men’s doubles title at the All England Club. Skupski aimed to become the first British player since Jonny Marray 11 years ago to win the men’s doubles title at Wimbledon, and only the second post-war. Additionally, he aspired to become the first Brit since Dorothy Round in 1937 to win a Wimbledon title for three consecutive years, following his mixed doubles triumphs in 2021 and 2022.
Skupski, at the age of 33, cherished his mixed titles; however, he openly expressed his desire to win the men’s doubles crown at Wimbledon above all else. Despite reaching the quarter-finals once before in 2017 with his brother Ken, they lost in the final as a pairing at the US Open last September. As the top seeds, they were considered favorites for the Wimbledon final but faced a tough challenge against 16th seeds Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos, who were also finalists in 2021.
However, Skupski and Koolhof put on an impressive display, defeating Granollers and Zeballos 6-4 6-4 in front of an ecstatic Centre Court crowd. Skupski made history by becoming the first British man in 100 years to clinch both the mixed and men’s doubles titles. “It’s surreal, growing up, watching these amazing Championships on TV, and starting off as a young boy at Palmerston Tennis Club in Liverpool,” said Skupski in an interview on court after the match. “This feeling doesn’t get better. Me and Wesley came together 18 months ago, and this year, winning a Grand Slam was one of our goals. To have achieved it feels incredible.”
